Familiar Territory16 viewsThe corn is high, and the smell of diesel exhaust is heavy as Western Maryland GP40-2 #4318 leads a sister B&O unit and two GP30s in the assault upon Sandpatch Grade. All three Chessie component roads are represented here, as the trailing GP30s carry B&O and C&O markings. Could #4318 once have traveled across Salisbury Viaduct, seen in the upper right corner? A lady never tells her age.

B&O GP40-2 #4032 Tuscarora Wye Niagara Falls NY16 viewsWestbound Chessie freight CG-41, led by GP40-2 #4032 in B&O blue, travels the west leg of Tuscarora Wye en route to Niagara Yard. After making its pickup, NI-42 will continue west across Suspension Bridge to the former Pere Marquette line across Southern Ontario.

C&O GP7 #4557 Niagara Yard Niagara Falls NY12 viewsC&O GP7 #4557, a product of GMD Canada, leads Chessie train CG-41 west out of Niagara Yard in Niagara Falls NY en route to Suspension Bridge and the former Pere Marquette line across southern Ontario province. The opening of Casino Niagara in Niagara Falls, Ontario sounded the death knell for this historic line.

Mixed Bag29 viewsAn Eastbound, carrying coal loads that originated on the P&LE, winds its way through the scenic Canisteo River valley behind a mixed consist of locomotives in five different paint schemes. Leading the pack is ex-RDG GP39-2 #7410 in D&H patched Reading green, followed by a leased BAR GP38-2, a leased ex-Chessie GP40-2, another ex-RDG GP39-2 in a modified blue D&H scheme, and an ex-BN SD45 now owned by designated operator NYS&W. The train is bound for a generating plant in Bow NH.

CP Rail SD40-2 #5678 Adrian NY22 viewsThe skies have brightened considerably as an Eastbound Buffalo to Binghamton freight rounds Rattlesnake Curve in Adrian NY. The hillside is ablaze with fall colors as CP Rail SD40-2 #5678 leads a pair of PLM SD40s and well-kept MLW RS18u #1811 at the head of a long merchandise freight.

With Attica Hill behind them, the three big locomotives will have no trouble maintaining track speed as they make their way east on the ex-EL Southern Tier Line.

A new lease on life for the D&H18 viewsAfter being wed and then divorced by Guilford Transportation Inustries, D&H was operated successfully by NYS&W before being purchased by Canadian rail giant CP Rail. Six axle SD40s and SD40-2s became the norm on rails that had hosted second generation U-Boats, Geeps, and Alcos a decade earlier. Here, leased PLM SD40 #3004 leads leased GATX SD40 #2002 and a CP Rail SD40-2 under the highway overpass at Canaseraga NY, as BUEB makes its way down the 10 MPH jointed rail of track #2 between Portage and Hornell.

D&H HAN-1 Canaseraga NY17 viewsA trio of even-numbered B40-8s, led by NYS&W #4002, passes beneath the highway overpass in the small town of Canaseraga NY. Westbound HAN-1 was a joint CSX, B&P, D&H and NYS&W venture, and the B40-7 fleet had been financed by major player CSX.
