B&M GP40-2 #313 William St. Buffalo NY65 viewsIn the months preceding the Guilford purchase of the D&H, a pooled power arrangement saw B&M geeps and MEC power visiting the North Yard in Buffalo. Here, a trio of pooled geeps idles at the William Street end of the yard. The ex-DL&W bridge in the background was torn down not long after this photo was taken.

D&H Sea-Land stack train at Dale NY69 viewsAn ex-D&H GP39-2 in fresh Guilford paint is sandwiched by a pair of blue B&M GP40-2s on a sunny October day as they hustle east through bucolic Dale NY after climbing the torturous hill at Attica. The arrival of double-stack container trains to both D&H and host Conrail's operating scheme more than doubled the number of daily trains on the ex-EL Southern Tier Line for a period of several years while Conrail tackled clearance problems on the Water Level Route.

Cruel Fate69 viewsAfter spending an afternoon in Napa with my family we began to head back, and found this off SR-12. The story of the NWP is one of conflict, irony and despair. In its modern times the NWP has been treated a stepchild in the communities that it once proudly served. The unit I'm standing on was one of many SD9s that are permanently stuck on this railroad. The NWP last run in the late 1990s at its full capacity and trailed off til 2000 when it was killed permanently. It's said to been reopened for a project called SMART, which has plans similar to NCTD's SPRINTER in southern California - that has yet to bear any fruit - http://nwprrhs.org/history.htm PNWTransitFreak

Hill and Dale60 viewsA loaded Conrail coal train bound for Johnson City NY passes through scenic Dale NY behind a pair of CW40-8s and a single SD50. With Attica Hill behind them, the three big locomotives will have no trouble maintaining track speed as they make their way east on the ex-EL Southern Tier Line.

Coal Dust in the wind49 views...even 100 miles from the coal mines the coal dust still billows from the hoppers... the wind howling and the train moving makes for quite a show (cough, cough) April, 2008geepsterMay 09, 2024

A new lease on life for the D&H87 viewsAfter being wed and then divorced by Guilford Transportation Inustries, D&H was operated successfully by NYS&W before being purchased by Canadian rail giant CP Rail. Six axle SD40s and SD40-2s became the norm on rails that had hosted second generation U-Boats, Geeps, and Alcos a decade earlier. Here, leased PLM SD40 #3004 leads leased GATX SD40 #2002 and a CP Rail SD40-2 under the highway overpass at Canaseraga NY, as BUEB makes its way down the 10 MPH jointed rail of track #2 between Portage and Hornell.
