CSX GP40-2 #6250 CP EL-3 Tonawanda NY4893 viewsAs Toronto to Buffalo freight CPBU heads east along the Niagara Branch en route to Conrail's Frontier Yard, Westbound CSX freight CG-41 arrives at CP EL-3 on its way to Niagara Yard near Suspension Bridge in Niagara Falls. The diverging track in the foreground is the former Lehigh Valley connecting track, which now serves as an industrial spur.

A hill to climb3075 viewsEastbound D&H Sea-Land doublestack train SLN-8 struggles up Attica Hill with two B&M bluebird GP38-2s bracketing an ex-D&H (nee-RDG) GP39-2 in fresh Guilford paint. SLN-8's circuitous CSX-B&P-D&H-NYS&W routing and varied motive power assignments were a joy to Western NY railfans. The train carried the symbol DTV8 while utilizing trackage rights over Conrail's Southern tier Line between Buffalo and Binghamton.

D&H Sea-Land stack train at Dale NY4638 viewsAn ex-D&H GP39-2 in fresh Guilford paint is sandwiched by a pair of blue B&M GP40-2s on a sunny October day as they hustle east through bucolic Dale NY after climbing the torturous hill at Attica. The arrival of double-stack container trains to both D&H and host Conrail's operating scheme more than doubled the number of daily trains on the ex-EL Southern Tier Line for a period of several years while Conrail tackled clearance problems on the Water Level Route.

Union Pacific 5500 is a 2-10-2 - UP 5500 was part of a final group of Class TTT-6 15 2-10-2s built by Baldwin and delivered to the LA-SL(Los Angelas-Salt Lake railroad) and given road numbers 5500 through 5514 in 1923.
Between 1917 and 1924, the Union Pacific Railroad purchased 144 2-10-2 "Santa Fe" types, divided into classes TTT-1 through TTT-7. The UPRR did not call them "Santa Fe" types. They instead gave them the "TTT" class name(Two-Ten-Two). American Locomotive Company (ALCO) built 18, Baldwin Locomotive Works built 89 and Lima Locomotive Works built 37. Despite the divided classes, all of the UP 2-10-2s had the same cylinder dimensions, driving wheel diameter and boiler pressure. After 26 years in service, the UP 5500 was 1 of 4 2-10-2's retired in 1949.

D&H GP39-2 #385 William St Buffalo NY1950 viewsLed by NYSW B40-8 #4024 and GATX GP40 #3705, renumbered D&H GP39-2 #385, seen approaching William St, still wears Guilford paint, though the large 'G' on the long hood has been blacked out. Following CP Rail's subsequent purchase of the D&H, 4-axle motive power would become increasingly rare on the Southern Tier Line.
