High Green on Sandpatch1 viewsClouds of blue diesel exhaust testify to the effort involved in moving tonnage up Sandpatch grade. A mixed quartet of second generation geeps, representing all three Chessie System component roads, shatters the morning stillness of nearby Meyersdale PA as they struggle relentlessly toward the summit. The Clear signal indication is certainly a welcome sight to the crew.

Familiar Territory1 viewsThe corn is high, and the smell of diesel exhaust is heavy as Western Maryland GP40-2 #4318 leads a sister B&O unit and two GP30s in the assault upon Sandpatch Grade. All three Chessie component roads are represented here, as the trailing GP30s carry B&O and C&O markings. Could #4318 once have traveled across Salisbury Viaduct, seen in the upper right corner? A lady never tells her age.

Two trains passing in the light3 viewsBy a fortunate coincidence, an eastbound VIA LRC set headed into Toronto's Union Station passes behind Ontario Northland's outbound Northlander, led by FP7 #1987. The warm late afternoon light brings out the richness of the Northlander's ex-TEE trainset's colours.

Class of '518 viewsC&O GP7 #5773, a graduate of the EMD class of 1951, leads Chessie System's CG-41 beneath the massive concrete counterweight of the ex-NYC lift bridge across the Erie Canal separating the small Western NY cities of Tonawanda and North Tonawanda, midway between Buffalo and Niagara Falls. The bridge on the parallel ex-EL Niagara Falls branch can be seen at left. On the far (Tonawanda) side of the bridge was Conrail CP EL-3, where Lehigh Valley trains, prior to April 1. 1976, would access trackage rights on Penn Central's ex-NYC Niagara Branch to reach Niagara Falls and Canadian connections.
