A hill to climb0 viewsEastbound D&H Sea-Land doublestack train SLN-8 struggles up Attica Hill with two B&M bluebird GP38-2s bracketing an ex-D&H (nee-RDG) GP39-2 in fresh Guilford paint. SLN-8's circuitous CSX-B&P-D&H-NYS&W routing and varied motive power assignments were a joy to Western NY railfans. The train carried the symbol DTV8 while utilizing trackage rights over Conrail's Southern tier Line between Buffalo and Binghamton.

CR SD50 #6759 BUOI Arkport NY0 viewsBrand new Conrail SD50 #6759 leads BUOI through Arkport NY, just north of Hornell. A pair of the big units could haul the longest Conrail freights up Attica Hill with ease, while tenant D&H's trains required pushers from among a motley crew of 4-axle power.

D&H Sea-Land stack train at Dale NY5 viewsAn ex-D&H GP39-2 in fresh Guilford paint is sandwiched by a pair of blue B&M GP40-2s on a sunny October day as they hustle east through bucolic Dale NY after climbing the torturous hill at Attica. The arrival of double-stack container trains to both D&H and host Conrail's operating scheme more than doubled the number of daily trains on the ex-EL Southern Tier Line for a period of several years while Conrail tackled clearance problems on the Water Level Route.

Hill and Dale2 viewsA loaded Conrail coal train bound for Johnson City NY passes through scenic Dale NY behind a pair of CW40-8s and a single SD50. With Attica Hill behind them, the three big locomotives will have no trouble maintaining track speed as they make their way east on the ex-EL Southern Tier Line.

GATX SD40-2 #2000 Attica Hill1 viewsA westbound D&H stack train works its way up Attica Hill on Conrail's Southern Tier Line with leased GATX SD40-2 #2000 leading two former Burlington Northern units now wearing NYS&W paint. CP Rail, the new owner of the Bridge Line, would lease a variety of colorful units from GATX, PLM and others, continuing a long history of interesting lashups on the D&H.

MEC U25B #228 + MEC (Guilford) U23B #2810 viewsThe Guilford era on the D&H dawned with high hopes and a bright splash of color, as exemplified by MEC U25B #228 and freshly repainted ex-D&H U23B #281, idling at the William St end of the North Yard in Buffalo NY. The units had apparently been used as pushers on a heavy westbound movement over Attica Hill.
