A hill to climb0 viewsEastbound D&H Sea-Land doublestack train SLN-8 struggles up Attica Hill with two B&M bluebird GP38-2s bracketing an ex-D&H (nee-RDG) GP39-2 in fresh Guilford paint. SLN-8's circuitous CSX-B&P-D&H-NYS&W routing and varied motive power assignments were a joy to Western NY railfans. The train carried the symbol DTV8 while utilizing trackage rights over Conrail's Southern tier Line between Buffalo and Binghamton.

B&M 315 at West Susquehanna PA1 viewsAn eastbound D&H train led by Boston & Maine #315 passes under the Erie coal tower at West Susquehanna PA, a relic of a much earlier era. The train will proceed east to a connecting track at Lanesboro PA where it will return to home rails via a complicate switchback maneuver at Jefferson Junction, necessitated by the construction work being done at the Belden Hill tunnel site to accommodate double-stack container traffic. This would be the last hurrah for the old D&H line across Ararat Summit.

D&H Sea-Land stack train at Dale NY5 viewsAn ex-D&H GP39-2 in fresh Guilford paint is sandwiched by a pair of blue B&M GP40-2s on a sunny October day as they hustle east through bucolic Dale NY after climbing the torturous hill at Attica. The arrival of double-stack container trains to both D&H and host Conrail's operating scheme more than doubled the number of daily trains on the ex-EL Southern Tier Line for a period of several years while Conrail tackled clearance problems on the Water Level Route.

North-Yard-02.jpg
B&M GP40-2 #313 William St. Buffalo NY0 viewsIn the months preceding the Guilford purchase of the D&H, a pooled power arrangement saw B&M geeps and MEC power visiting the North Yard in Buffalo. Here, a trio of pooled geeps idles at the William Street end of the yard. The ex-DL&W bridge in the background was torn down not long after this photo was taken.
