CR C40-8W #6103 Canaseraga NY1 viewsThe miles and road grime are already beginnning to add up for Conrail C40-8W #6103 and her C40-8 cousin as they lead Buffalo NY to Oak Island NJ freight BUOI beneath the highway overpass at Canaseraga NY, north of Hornell. Conrail dispatchers invariably lined the home road's freights for the fast iron on track one, while tenant D&H's eastbound movements frequently used the 10 MPH jointed rail of track two between Portage and Hornell.

D&H Sea-Land stack train at Dale NY5 viewsAn ex-D&H GP39-2 in fresh Guilford paint is sandwiched by a pair of blue B&M GP40-2s on a sunny October day as they hustle east through bucolic Dale NY after climbing the torturous hill at Attica. The arrival of double-stack container trains to both D&H and host Conrail's operating scheme more than doubled the number of daily trains on the ex-EL Southern Tier Line for a period of several years while Conrail tackled clearance problems on the Water Level Route.

CR SD50 #6787 OIBU Lanesboro PA0 viewsYou would never know it, but Conrail's Oak Island to Buffalo freight is crossing famed Starucca Viaduct in Lanesboro PA. While our attentions were riveted on the dramatic D&H detour operations down below, OIBU slipped up on us unawares, led by brand new SD50 #6787. The big locos became instant favorites, with a sleek look and awesome pulling power.

CR SD60 #6840 East Hornell NY1 viewsOne a hub of activity in its Erie Lackawanna heyday, Hornell Yard in the Conrail era saw use mostly as a car storage facility. The former EL shop complex at this date was being used by Morrison-Knudsen to refurbish commuter rail cars. Eastbound BUOI, behind CR SD60 #6840, an SD40-2, and a GE CW40-8 are seen leaving East Hornell NY. The scenic Canisteo River Valley lies ahead.
