A hill to climb1 viewsEastbound D&H Sea-Land doublestack train SLN-8 struggles up Attica Hill with two B&M bluebird GP38-2s bracketing an ex-D&H (nee-RDG) GP39-2 in fresh Guilford paint. SLN-8's circuitous CSX-B&P-D&H-NYS&W routing and varied motive power assignments were a joy to Western NY railfans. The train carried the symbol DTV8 while utilizing trackage rights over Conrail's Southern tier Line between Buffalo and Binghamton.

B&M 315 at West Susquehanna PA3 viewsAn eastbound D&H train led by Boston & Maine #315 passes under the Erie coal tower at West Susquehanna PA, a relic of a much earlier era. The train will proceed east to a connecting track at Lanesboro PA where it will return to home rails via a complicate switchback maneuver at Jefferson Junction, necessitated by the construction work being done at the Belden Hill tunnel site to accommodate double-stack container traffic. This would be the last hurrah for the old D&H line across Ararat Summit.

D&H HAN-1 Canaseraga NY2 viewsA trio of even-numbered B40-8s, led by NYS&W #4002, passes beneath the highway overpass in the small town of Canaseraga NY. Westbound HAN-1 was a joint CSX, B&P, D&H and NYS&W venture, and the B40-7 fleet had been financed by major player CSX.

CR C40-8W #6103 Canaseraga NY5 viewsThe miles and road grime are already beginnning to add up for Conrail C40-8W #6103 and her C40-8 cousin as they lead Buffalo NY to Oak Island NJ freight BUOI beneath the highway overpass at Canaseraga NY, north of Hornell. Conrail dispatchers invariably lined the home road's freights for the fast iron on track one, while tenant D&H's eastbound movements frequently used the 10 MPH jointed rail of track two between Portage and Hornell.

A new lease on life for the D&H3 viewsAfter being wed and then divorced by Guilford Transportation Inustries, D&H was operated successfully by NYS&W before being purchased by Canadian rail giant CP Rail. Six axle SD40s and SD40-2s became the norm on rails that had hosted second generation U-Boats, Geeps, and Alcos a decade earlier. Here, leased PLM SD40 #3004 leads leased GATX SD40 #2002 and a CP Rail SD40-2 under the highway overpass at Canaseraga NY, as BUEB makes its way down the 10 MPH jointed rail of track #2 between Portage and Hornell.

D&H Sea-Land stack train at Dale NY10 viewsAn ex-D&H GP39-2 in fresh Guilford paint is sandwiched by a pair of blue B&M GP40-2s on a sunny October day as they hustle east through bucolic Dale NY after climbing the torturous hill at Attica. The arrival of double-stack container trains to both D&H and host Conrail's operating scheme more than doubled the number of daily trains on the ex-EL Southern Tier Line for a period of several years while Conrail tackled clearance problems on the Water Level Route.

D&H U33C #658 SK Yard Buffalo NY8 viewsSix-axle D&H power was rarely seen east of Binghamton. D&H U33C #658 makes a surprise appearance on a gloomy November day at SK Yard in Buffalo NY, accompanied by MEC #281, a former D&H U23B now dressed in Guilford colors.

D&H GP39-2 #385 William St Buffalo NY11 viewsLed by NYSW B40-8 #4024 and GATX GP40 #3705, renumbered D&H GP39-2 #385, seen approaching William St, still wears Guilford paint, though the large 'G' on the long hood has been blacked out. Following CP Rail's subsequent purchase of the D&H, 4-axle motive power would become increasingly rare on the Southern Tier Line.
