A new lease on life for the D&H3 viewsAfter being wed and then divorced by Guilford Transportation Inustries, D&H was operated successfully by NYS&W before being purchased by Canadian rail giant CP Rail. Six axle SD40s and SD40-2s became the norm on rails that had hosted second generation U-Boats, Geeps, and Alcos a decade earlier. Here, leased PLM SD40 #3004 leads leased GATX SD40 #2002 and a CP Rail SD40-2 under the highway overpass at Canaseraga NY, as BUEB makes its way down the 10 MPH jointed rail of track #2 between Portage and Hornell.

D&H Sea-Land stack train at Dale NY10 viewsAn ex-D&H GP39-2 in fresh Guilford paint is sandwiched by a pair of blue B&M GP40-2s on a sunny October day as they hustle east through bucolic Dale NY after climbing the torturous hill at Attica. The arrival of double-stack container trains to both D&H and host Conrail's operating scheme more than doubled the number of daily trains on the ex-EL Southern Tier Line for a period of several years while Conrail tackled clearance problems on the Water Level Route.

D&H GP39-2 #385 William St Buffalo NY11 viewsLed by NYSW B40-8 #4024 and GATX GP40 #3705, renumbered D&H GP39-2 #385, seen approaching William St, still wears Guilford paint, though the large 'G' on the long hood has been blacked out. Following CP Rail's subsequent purchase of the D&H, 4-axle motive power would become increasingly rare on the Southern Tier Line.

MEC U25B #228 + MEC (Guilford) U23B #2810 viewsThe Guilford era on the D&H dawned with high hopes and a bright splash of color, as exemplified by MEC U25B #228 and freshly repainted ex-D&H U23B #281, idling at the William St end of the North Yard in Buffalo NY. The units had apparently been used as pushers on a heavy westbound movement over Attica Hill.
