harsh grade - Coal Creek227 viewsThis photo illustrates the effects of heavy WB trains clawing their way up the steep grade, just outside of Denver. By the time the power for a westbound coal train reaches this crossing, the engines are at full throttle and the pressure on the railhead is making it look like the top of a heavily hammered chisel.signalman

UPRR 2-10-2 #5500173 viewsEngineer for Union Pacific, Archie A. Searle in the cab of U.P. 5500

Union Pacific 5500 is a 2-10-2 - UP 5500 was part of a final group of Class TTT-6 15 2-10-2s built by Baldwin and delivered to the LA-SL(Los Angelas-Salt Lake railroad) and given road numbers 5500 through 5514 in 1923.

Between 1917 and 1924, the Union Pacific Railroad purchased 144 2-10-2 "Santa Fe" types, divided into classes TTT-1 through TTT-7. The UPRR did not call them "Santa Fe" types. They instead gave them the "TTT" class name(Two-Ten-Two). American Locomotive Company (ALCO) built 18, Baldwin Locomotive Works built 89 and Lima Locomotive Works built 37. Despite the divided classes, all of the UP 2-10-2s had the same cylinder dimensions, driving wheel diameter and boiler pressure. After 26 years in service, the UP 5500 was 1 of 4 2-10-2's retired in 1949.
This photo is part of Archie A. Searle's family collection.
