A new lease on life for the D&H1115 viewsAfter being wed and then divorced by Guilford Transportation Inustries, D&H was operated successfully by NYS&W before being purchased by Canadian rail giant CP Rail. Six axle SD40s and SD40-2s became the norm on rails that had hosted second generation U-Boats, Geeps, and Alcos a decade earlier. Here, leased PLM SD40 #3004 leads leased GATX SD40 #2002 and a CP Rail SD40-2 under the highway overpass at Canaseraga NY, as BUEB makes its way down the 10 MPH jointed rail of track #2 between Portage and Hornell.

UPRR 2-10-2 #5500997 viewsEngineer for Union Pacific, Archie A. Searle in the cab of U.P. 5500
Union Pacific 5500 is a 2-10-2 - UP 5500 was part of a final group of Class TTT-6 15 2-10-2s built by Baldwin and delivered to the LA-SL(Los Angelas-Salt Lake railroad) and given road numbers 5500 through 5514 in 1923.
Between 1917 and 1924, the Union Pacific Railroad purchased 144 2-10-2 "Santa Fe" types, divided into classes TTT-1 through TTT-7. The UPRR did not call them "Santa Fe" types. They instead gave them the "TTT" class name(Two-Ten-Two). American Locomotive Company (ALCO) built 18, Baldwin Locomotive Works built 89 and Lima Locomotive Works built 37. Despite the divided classes, all of the UP 2-10-2s had the same cylinder dimensions, driving wheel diameter and boiler pressure. After 26 years in service, the UP 5500 was 1 of 4 2-10-2's retired in 1949.

CR C40-8W #6103 Canaseraga NY961 viewsThe miles and road grime are already beginnning to add up for Conrail C40-8W #6103 and her C40-8 cousin as they lead Buffalo NY to Oak Island NJ freight BUOI beneath the highway overpass at Canaseraga NY, north of Hornell. Conrail dispatchers invariably lined the home road's freights for the fast iron on track one, while tenant D&H's eastbound movements frequently used the 10 MPH jointed rail of track two between Portage and Hornell.
