U.P.'s Burnham Shops(yard) - Denver733 viewsU.P.'s Burnham Shops(southern half - looking south)- June 17, 2008 Now a U.P. maintenance facility, this yard and shops were once the headquarters of D&RGW's Mechanical Department in Denver. It was built in 1870's, and serviced narrow gauge equipment. The Burnham Shops eventually became known as one of the best in the country.
This U.P. shop continues to do everything from full maintenance to complete rebuilds and modifications of their locomotives. The tracks on the right lead to the turntable, load-testing, and the shops. The tracks below are generally used as storage for retired equipment.RI 900

UPRR 2-10-2 #5500733 viewsEngineer for Union Pacific, Archie A. Searle in the cab of U.P. 5500
Union Pacific 5500 is a 2-10-2 - UP 5500 was part of a final group of Class TTT-6 15 2-10-2s built by Baldwin and delivered to the LA-SL(Los Angelas-Salt Lake railroad) and given road numbers 5500 through 5514 in 1923.
Between 1917 and 1924, the Union Pacific Railroad purchased 144 2-10-2 "Santa Fe" types, divided into classes TTT-1 through TTT-7. The UPRR did not call them "Santa Fe" types. They instead gave them the "TTT" class name(Two-Ten-Two). American Locomotive Company (ALCO) built 18, Baldwin Locomotive Works built 89 and Lima Locomotive Works built 37. Despite the divided classes, all of the UP 2-10-2s had the same cylinder dimensions, driving wheel diameter and boiler pressure. After 26 years in service, the UP 5500 was 1 of 4 2-10-2's retired in 1949.
