B&O freight Ashford Junction NY177 viewsB&O GP40 #3776 leads a long northbound freight past the classic B&O tower at Ashford Junction NY. In a few years' time, this would become the junction of the Rochester & Southern and the Buffalo and Pittsburgh lines from their respective home cities.

A hill to climb166 viewsEastbound D&H Sea-Land doublestack train SLN-8 struggles up Attica Hill with two B&M bluebird GP38-2s bracketing an ex-D&H (nee-RDG) GP39-2 in fresh Guilford paint. SLN-8's circuitous CSX-B&P-D&H-NYS&W routing and varied motive power assignments were a joy to Western NY railfans. The train carried the symbol DTV8 while utilizing trackage rights over Conrail's Southern tier Line between Buffalo and Binghamton.

B&M 315 at West Susquehanna PA160 viewsAn eastbound D&H train led by Boston & Maine #315 passes under the Erie coal tower at West Susquehanna PA, a relic of a much earlier era. The train will proceed east to a connecting track at Lanesboro PA where it will return to home rails via a complicate switchback maneuver at Jefferson Junction, necessitated by the construction work being done at the Belden Hill tunnel site to accommodate double-stack container traffic. This would be the last hurrah for the old D&H line across Ararat Summit.

Cruel Fate158 viewsAfter spending an afternoon in Napa with my family we began to head back, and found this off SR-12. The story of the NWP is one of conflict, irony and despair. In its modern times the NWP has been treated a stepchild in the communities that it once proudly served. The unit I'm standing on was one of many SD9s that are permanently stuck on this railroad. The NWP last run in the late 1990s at its full capacity and trailed off til 2000 when it was killed permanently. It's said to been reopened for a project called SMART, which has plans similar to NCTD's SPRINTER in southern California - that has yet to bear any fruit - http://nwprrhs.org/history.htm PNWTransitFreak
