High Green on Sandpatch6217 viewsClouds of blue diesel exhaust testify to the effort involved in moving tonnage up Sandpatch grade. A mixed quartet of second generation geeps, representing all three Chessie System component roads, shatters the morning stillness of nearby Meyersdale PA as they struggle relentlessly toward the summit. The Clear signal indication is certainly a welcome sight to the crew.

Familiar Territory6073 viewsThe corn is high, and the smell of diesel exhaust is heavy as Western Maryland GP40-2 #4318 leads a sister B&O unit and two GP30s in the assault upon Sandpatch Grade. All three Chessie component roads are represented here, as the trailing GP30s carry B&O and C&O markings. Could #4318 once have traveled across Salisbury Viaduct, seen in the upper right corner? A lady never tells her age.

Rattlesnake Curve Adrian NY5891 viewsA favorite railfan destination, the sweeping curve on Conrail's ex-EL Southern Tier Line along the Canisteo River offered many excellent vistas.

D&H HAN-1 Canaseraga NY5699 viewsA trio of even-numbered B40-8s, led by NYS&W #4002, passes beneath the highway overpass in the small town of Canaseraga NY. Westbound HAN-1 was a joint CSX, B&P, D&H and NYS&W venture, and the B40-7 fleet had been financed by major player CSX.

B&M 315 at West Susquehanna PA5524 viewsAn eastbound D&H train led by Boston & Maine #315 passes under the Erie coal tower at West Susquehanna PA, a relic of a much earlier era. The train will proceed east to a connecting track at Lanesboro PA where it will return to home rails via a complicate switchback maneuver at Jefferson Junction, necessitated by the construction work being done at the Belden Hill tunnel site to accommodate double-stack container traffic. This would be the last hurrah for the old D&H line across Ararat Summit.

harsh grade - Coal Creek5451 viewsThis photo illustrates the effects of heavy WB trains clawing their way up the steep grade, just outside of Denver. By the time the power for a westbound coal train reaches this crossing, the engines are at full throttle and the pressure on the railhead is making it look like the top of a heavily hammered chisel.signalman

A new lease on life for the D&H5195 viewsAfter being wed and then divorced by Guilford Transportation Inustries, D&H was operated successfully by NYS&W before being purchased by Canadian rail giant CP Rail. Six axle SD40s and SD40-2s became the norm on rails that had hosted second generation U-Boats, Geeps, and Alcos a decade earlier. Here, leased PLM SD40 #3004 leads leased GATX SD40 #2002 and a CP Rail SD40-2 under the highway overpass at Canaseraga NY, as BUEB makes its way down the 10 MPH jointed rail of track #2 between Portage and Hornell.

The opening of Casino Niagara in Niagara Falls, Ontario sounded the death knell for this historic line.

N&W C30-7 #8021 entering Buffalo Junction Yard4722 viewsFollowing the closing of Bison Yard, N&W moved their operations to the smaller Buffalo Junction Yard, located west of D&H's SK Yard and east of Conrail's CP Draw. The Seneca Street bridge was an excellent spot to view the action as C30-7 8021 leads the way into the yard with cars picked up from the D&H. Buffalo's Central Terminal can be seen in the upper right corner.
