Coal Dust in the wind1085 views...even 100 miles from the coal mines the coal dust still billows from the hoppers... the wind howling and the train moving makes for quite a show (cough, cough) April, 2008geepster

CSX Power1062 viewsThis was power that I had this past spring, on a loaded coal train, which we had just spotted in the Blackmar Siding. If you look close, you can see my conductor removing the EOTgtw5812

Two trains passing in the light1017 viewsBy a fortunate coincidence, an eastbound VIA LRC set headed into Toronto's Union Station passes behind Ontario Northland's outbound Northlander, led by FP7 #1987. The warm late afternoon light brings out the richness of the Northlander's ex-TEE trainset's colours.

ULAURBE passes the SCMRBE971 viewsULAURBE passes the SCMRBE at North Bow, both on their way to Roberts Bank coal port. The SCM lost its DPU's and had to back into Bow siding and wait for a 3 unit set of 2nd generation power to help shove it north over the 1% grades out of Bellingham.BCR4601

CP Rail SD40-2 #5678 Adrian NY968 viewsThe skies have brightened considerably as an Eastbound Buffalo to Binghamton freight rounds Rattlesnake Curve in Adrian NY. The hillside is ablaze with fall colors as CP Rail SD40-2 #5678 leads a pair of PLM SD40s and well-kept MLW RS18u #1811 at the head of a long merchandise freight.

U.P. main - west of Denver934 viewsThis picture is looking south(Denver is to the left). This is one of the many challenging grades for loaded coal trains to climb, as they grind their way up through Coal Creek Canyonsignalman

harsh grade - Coal Creek930 viewsThis photo illustrates the effects of heavy WB trains clawing their way up the steep grade, just outside of Denver. By the time the power for a westbound coal train reaches this crossing, the engines are at full throttle and the pressure on the railhead is making it look like the top of a heavily hammered chisel.signalman

High Green on Sandpatch850 viewsClouds of blue diesel exhaust testify to the effort involved in moving tonnage up Sandpatch grade. A mixed quartet of second generation geeps, representing all three Chessie System component roads, shatters the morning stillness of nearby Meyersdale PA as they struggle relentlessly toward the summit. The Clear signal indication is certainly a welcome sight to the crew.
