U.P.'s Burnham Shops yard - Denver42 viewsU.P.'s Burnham Shops yard (northern half, looking north from the 8th street bridge)These locomotives, most having been in revenue service for many years, are now in storage. The 20+ SD9043AC's, however, have been pulled from service indefinitely. A maintenance hog from the start, these lower HP units, aren't moving anything anymore. RI 900

Class of '5138 viewsC&O GP7 #5773, a graduate of the EMD class of 1951, leads Chessie System's CG-41 beneath the massive concrete counterweight of the ex-NYC lift bridge across the Erie Canal separating the small Western NY cities of Tonawanda and North Tonawanda, midway between Buffalo and Niagara Falls. The bridge on the parallel ex-EL Niagara Falls branch can be seen at left. On the far (Tonawanda) side of the bridge was Conrail CP EL-3, where Lehigh Valley trains, prior to April 1. 1976, would access trackage rights on Penn Central's ex-NYC Niagara Branch to reach Niagara Falls and Canadian connections.

U.P.'s Burnham Shops(yard) - Denver38 viewsU.P.'s Burnham Shops(southern half - looking south)- June 17, 2008 Now a U.P. maintenance facility, this yard and shops were once the headquarters of D&RGW's Mechanical Department in Denver. It was built in 1870's, and serviced narrow gauge equipment. The Burnham Shops eventually became known as one of the best in the country.

This U.P. shop continues to do everything from full maintenance to complete rebuilds and modifications of their locomotives. The tracks on the right lead to the turntable, load-testing, and the shops. The tracks below are generally used as storage for retired equipment.

History Fading35 viewsThe DPUs of this BNSF Railway manifest-train slam by as it makes its way south through Cortez California on the Stockton Subdivision. The Warbonnet is one of few that lasts today in its Super Chief-inspired paint scheme. Behind it is a unit wearing 'Heritage II' paint scheme which is hybrid of Santa Fe's Warbonnet and Great Northern's Empire Builder schemes. Both locomotives are General Electric C44-9W's which is the power of choice on BNSF's high-speed trainsPNWTransitFreak
