MEC U25B #228 William St Buffalo NY21 viewsUnits from all three of Guilford's major components are visible in this shot, with a freshly painted ex-D&H U23B thrown in for good measure. The star of the show is matronly MEC U25B #228, here basking in the summer sun. I hope she's not allergic to milkweed pollen.

Backing to the Fuel Pad...20 viewsWhen we return Coal power light at Flint, sometimes we will take manifest with it. This requires us to pick up some of our own LSRC power, for the return trip north, after dropping the run-thru power. This is our rear unit, which I took while backing to our fuel padgtw5812

UPRR 2-10-2 #550057 viewsEngineer for Union Pacific, Archie A. Searle in the cab of U.P. 5500

Union Pacific 5500 is a 2-10-2 - UP 5500 was part of a final group of Class TTT-6 15 2-10-2s built by Baldwin and delivered to the LA-SL(Los Angelas-Salt Lake railroad) and given road numbers 5500 through 5514 in 1923.

Between 1917 and 1924, the Union Pacific Railroad purchased 144 2-10-2 "Santa Fe" types, divided into classes TTT-1 through TTT-7. The UPRR did not call them "Santa Fe" types. They instead gave them the "TTT" class name(Two-Ten-Two). American Locomotive Company (ALCO) built 18, Baldwin Locomotive Works built 89 and Lima Locomotive Works built 37. Despite the divided classes, all of the UP 2-10-2s had the same cylinder dimensions, driving wheel diameter and boiler pressure. After 26 years in service, the UP 5500 was 1 of 4 2-10-2's retired in 1949.
This photo is part of Archie A. Searle's family collection.

D&H GP39-2 #385 William St Buffalo NY38 viewsLed by NYSW B40-8 #4024 and GATX GP40 #3705, renumbered D&H GP39-2 #385, seen approaching William St, still wears Guilford paint, though the large 'G' on the long hood has been blacked out. Following CP Rail's subsequent purchase of the D&H, 4-axle motive power would become increasingly rare on the Southern Tier Line.
